And moreover security is a dynamic concept, depends highly on world’s major threats, security problems and politics which kept on changing and hence we cannot give a static definition to security. Finally, this essay concludes on the basis of the analysis that there are lots of different definitions of security every theory has its own interpretation of security based on the perceived threats, referent objects and security problems, that security is an essentially contested concept.

Fourthly, this essay sheds light on some of the work of Baldwin who opposes the concept that security is an essentially contested concept and presented his own point of view that security is a confused or insufficiently explicated concept rather than essentially contested concept. Thirdly, this essay presents three major theories and sheds light how these different theories define security differently under their own concept of threats and referent objects, and that these different interpretations of referent object make it harder to give a static definition to security. Secondly, this essay presents some of the major definitions of security presented by Ian Ballany, Penelope Hartland-Thunberg, Walter Lipman, Giacomo Luciani, Ole Waever and Ken Booth, and these different definitions depict that how security is an essentially contested concept. Firstly, this essay defines what essentially contested concept is, because without defining “essentially contested concept” we cannot conclude whether security is essentially contested concept or not. This essay is divided into five major portions. There are hundreds of different interpretations what security is, due to this and a number of other factors some of the Scholars like Buzan, Smith etc coined security as an essentially contested concept. There are some concepts which are inherently very hard to define like peace, happiness, violence, terrorism, freedom and justice, security is also one of them (Barash and Webel 2014). Moreover there is no single agreement on what security is in the present/same era as well. Due to this varying nature of world events/threats and direct relationship between world events/threats and security, it is very hard to give a static definition to security. Security was defined differently in pre cold war era and differently in post cold war era, in the same way security was defined differently after the event of 9/11. The world has been facing security problems since beginning and the dynamics of security kept on changing from time to time.

War, terrorism, ethnic conflicts, environment, hunger and poverty are major security concerns of present world but the security problems/concerns of near past were bit different in nature.
